Hello! My husband and I are visiting Albuquerque. This afternoon, we visited the Rio Grande Nature Center. I’m pretty darn sure I saw a juniper titmouse there. I got a good look. It’s not on the sighting list there. Is it just too unlikely that’s what I saw, or is it possible?

Thanks for the info. I enjoy your blog.

      Hi Charlene,

That’s certainly possible. Locally, Juniper Titmice are usually only found in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains east of the city where there are junipers (they are well named birds). But they can and do move around. There are a few records on eBird from the nature center, and I’m not sure why it’s not on the list. They are printing a new list soon. Another gray bird that is common at the nature center are Bushtits, but they are a lot smaller and don’t have a crest.

While you’re visiting, I hope you can make it down to Bosque del Apache refuge (there’s a crane festival this weekend) and get up to the Sandia Crest house to see three species of Rosy Finches.

Thanks for reading the blog. I’ve not been out birding lately, but I will have some time over the next week.
